2018 Rules

Postby Al Fernandez » Tue Nov 07, 2017 10:23 pm

Obviously not a lot of discussion on rules for CMC, which is both good and bad. The good is the rules are stable and there's not much controversy or grey to try to clarify. The bad...well, some say there's no such thing as bad publicity so take that as you like :D

In any case, the rules for 2018 were submitted to NASA per their declared schedule and should be published on the national site any day now. There are very few changes for '18, but I'll point them out:

1st...for 2018 NASA decided to standardize the look and feel of the rules books for all series. This means standard format and content in a standard order. For CMC this means the 2018 rules will look different, with the content you're all familiar with having moved to different sections. Unfortunately it also means no more picture of a CMC car in action on the cover, and a few other less personalized details.

2nd...added clarity that gear ratios have to function, including 6th gear. This is intended to keep creative folks from lightening the rotating assembly via various means to achieve a 0:0 6th gear ratio. Not sure anyone has actually done that, and not sure doing so would help given the dyno would adjust, but in any case, no need to do such silly things.

3rd and last...added allowance for some aftermarket ignition components. When the ignition system rules were made there was a clear price advantage between OEM and the various aftermarket companies that were advertising all kinds of performance increases using their coils/distributors/etc. Nowadays there are many cases where aftermarket parts are actually much cheaper than OEM, so the balance shifts in their favor.

With the format standardization of NASA rule books, is there any thought to adding change bars to the left hand margin so we can quickly and effectively view any changes from year to year?

Itd get pretty messy for this year from a formatting perspective.
